I get inspired by this particular artwork of Lipman’s because it makes me want to create something tragically beautiful. “Bride” makes me want to imagine something that will make people think as much as I did when I began to observe this piece. The artwork that Kamya and I made is called “Mother”, in respect to the one worded title of the original. We started off with the idea of a baby mobile, hence the name. The use of “tiers” is brought into our response piece as well, except with ours the first tier is the largest, and they get smaller from there. Instead of glass, we used origami animals, mostly since we had had experience with making origami animals in the past, so that came naturally to us (to a degree, anyway. I was horrible, while Kamya was the origami master). I personally wished to carry on the message of a slow descent. We did this by using animals. Butterflies go around the first tier—they represent innocence. The flowers and cranes/swans do as well. But the lowest level is the snakes (that’s what they were supposed to be anyway…). The idea of using snakes comes from the idea of the Seven Deadly Sins. Snakes are commonly used to represent one of the sins. I feel like we made a pretty piece that satisfies my desire to create something akin to “Bride”. | |
